The Institute organized Conference & Exhibition on Urban Mobility, December 3-5, 2009 at New Delhi.

URBAN MOBILITY INDIA 2009

INTRODUCTION

With rapid urbanization, the Urban Transport scenario in India is fast warming up, with landmark Metro Rail projects having taken central stage across major cities. Metro is already operating in Delhi and Kolkata - Delhi will add another 125 km of Metro rail by 2010 and Kolkata has started work on the East West line. Besides, construction for Metro rail has started in Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai, while in Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Cochin and Chandigarh, Metro Rail projects are in advanced stages of planning.

Significantly, besides Metro Rail, other modes of mass transit are also under various stages of planning and implementation. Light rail projects have been planned for Delhi, Kolkata and Noida. Monorail projects are being planned for Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects are underway in many cities. In small cities standard bus services are being augmented in a big way. Recently the Government of India has supported procurement of 15,500 low floor/semi low floor/standard buses for cities under the aegis of Jn. National Urban Renewal Mission.

To disseminate knowledge on urban transport, the Ministry of Urban Development of the Government of India has decided to convene a conference cum expo every year as envisaged in the National Urban Transport Policy, 2006. The aim of this conference is to bring together policy makers, decision makers, planners, engineers, manufacturers and suppliers of various Technologies in road and rail based modes of mass transit and associated technologies such as ITS, for mutual interaction and benefit from each others' work/experience. International and National experts, who have led the implementation and operation of best practice projects will share their experiences and exchange information. Research agencies will present their findings on relevant issues.

The first such event was held in New Delhi from December 3rd to 5th, 2008 organized by Institute of Urban Transport which was set up in 1997 to be the nodal point for information related to urban transport. Nearly 400 delegates participated and 37 exhibitors set up stalls. There were 23 National and 19 International speakers in technical sessions.13 cities were represented by 7 mayors and 29 decision makers including traffic police officials.
