INTRODUCTION
- The National Urban Transport Policy of the Government of India, 2006 (NUTP), has laid a very strong emphasis on building capabilities at the State and city level to address the problems associated with urban transport and undertakes the task of developing sustainable urban transport systems.
- Accordingly, The Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India has taken two prominent steps to encourage cities to reform their city transport.
- An Annual Conference-cum-exhibition on 'Urban Mobility' in Delhi every year (UMI) for dissemination of information and to facilitate exchange of ideas, and
- It recognizes good urban transport initiatives by giving awards to selected good practice projects.
UMI 11 will be preceeded by a full day Research Symposium on December 3rd to disseminate some of the selected research work in the field of Urban Transport. The event is being organized by the Institute of Urban Transport, India New Delhi in association with Mirabilis advisory an Economic development consultancy. - EST Forum in Asia : The UMI, 2011 will be co-hosting the Sixth Regional Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Forum in Asia under the aegis of the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) for which there will be participation from 23 Asian countries at the level of Ministers and Senior Officials.The Conference cum Exhibition will bring together technology and service providers in urban transport from India and abroad in various modes; Pedestrians, non motorized transport, Bus operations, BRT, LRT, metro rail, Environment and traffic management, congestion management, Ropeways, Parking and ITS etc. as well as the policy makers, practitioners and officials under one roof.
- Theme: The Conference theme for 2011 is 'Sustainable Mobility'.
